Rachel and her husband, Joe, live on Social Security. The couple also receives $16 per month in food stamps.
Rachel is retired from a job in home health care. Joe retired from his job at a tire store. “We weren’t making ends meet,” Rachel said. “A lot of it was due to medical bills.” She wound up in the hospital in 2008 because her lungs collapsed. Medicare pays 80 percent, she said. They had to pay the rest.
Her husband is still paying back some medical bills, she said. Receiving supplemental food “really makes a difference for us,” Rachel said. “It helps our food bills and food costs.” Without the supplemental food, the couple has few options. “We have a bread program at our church,” Rachel said. Otherwise, “I don’t know. No ma’am, I don’t,” she said.
